SCF rides big inning past Indian River S.C.
Lakewood Ranch's Brad Zunica keyed a six-run sixth inning with a two-run home run Thursday as the State College of Florida baseball team earned a 9-5 victory over Indian River State College at Robert C. Wynn Field.
The Manatees (6-2) trailed 4-3 entering the big sixth inning. Taylor Cockrell started and got the win, pitching six innings and giving up six hits and four earned runs while striking out six and walking one. Matt Zino pitched three scoreless innings for the save.
Richie Rivero had two hits, including a two-run homer, and Jared Pruett went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
BRADEN RIVER 16, SOUTHEAST 4 -- Cole Pencosky threw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and Tanner Fults went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs as the visiting Pirates (1-1) prevailed.
Noah Paulson added two hits, scored twice and drove in three runs for Braden River.
OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 7, TAMPA CAMBRIDGE CHRISTIAN 1 -- Jake Romine got the win on the mound, doubled at the plate and scored twice as the host Thunder rolled to 2-0.
Romine pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing a hit and an earned run. He struck out four. Jim Kuebler and Austin Hoppe each had a hit and an RBI.
JV: Zach Rodgers and Tucker Berry combined on a shutout as the Manatee junior varsity squad defeated visiting Riverview 1-0. Timmer Hill had two hits and two stolen bases for the Hurricanes (2-0).
BAYSHORE 5, MANATEE 0 -- LaShara James went 3-for-4 from the plate for the Bruins, driving in three with a home run and a double as Bayshore (4-0) remained undefeated with a victory over the host Hurricanes. Miriam Schmoll earned the win behind a one hitter. She fanned 15 Manatee hitters.
SOUTHEAST 18, ST. PETERSBURG GIBBS 0 (3) -- Megan Stevens tossed three innings of one-hit ball for the Seminoles in a shortened home rout over the Gladiators.
Jurnee Bennett and Briana Mays led the way at the plate for Southeast.
OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 4, VENICE 3 -- Connor Krug won a three-set singles match and combined with Josh Samuel for a doubles victory as the host Thunder (4-1) defeated the Indians (3-2).
Phillip Chiritescu and Vaughn Garcia also won singles matches.
SOUTHEAST 7, BOOKER 0 -- Madelyn Kumar, Daria Muklewicz and Maggie Ilecheva all tallied singles wins, then Kumar and Muklewicz teamed up for a doubles victory as the host Seminoles (1-2) routed Booker.
OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 6, VENICE 1 -- M'Balia Bangoura, Sydney Sforzo, Megan Jones and Charlotte Dixon each won a singles match then earned part of a doubles victory as the Thunder (4-1) downed the visiting Indians (3-2).
SAINT STEPHEN'S 10, TAMPA WHARTON 9 -- Freshman Baylee Barker scored five times, and eighth-grader Kendall Miller added three goals and two assists as the visiting Falcons (2-0) held off the Wildcats.
Merry Moore and Abby Lipton each had a goal and an assist. Krysten Weaver made eight second-half saves.
