Jill McElderry fired a three-hit shutout in the second game to finish off a doubleheader sweep for the State College of Florida softball team over Lake-Sumter State College in the Manatees' home openers Saturday.
McElderry struck out six in a 7-0 victory. Erica Ward, Melinda Geisel and Brittany Gilliam each had three hits for the Manatees (5-3) in that game.
In the first game, Kennedy Dean's walk-off single scored Savannah Jerkins in the bottom of the eighth inning to give SCF a 3-2 victory. Lakewood Ranch's Jenn Trotter went 2-for-3.
STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 5, FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE AT JACKSONVILLE 3 -- Manatee product Danny Lee reached base four times, scoring once and driving in a run, as the host Manatees (5-1) defeated the Blue Wave.
Mitch Piatnik add two hits, and Gabe Moore picked up the victory on the mound with three scoreless innings of relief. Ronnie Ortiz pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
STATE MEET -- Bayshore's Sierra Sanders and Palmetto's Sha'la McMillan just missed placing in the heavyweight division, tying for seventh at Kissimmee Civic Center.
Sanders bench-pressed 225 pounds and recorded a weight of 175 pounds in the clean and jerk for a total of 400 pounds. McMillan excelled in the clean and jerk, where she lifted 240 pounds. She managed 160 in the bench press.
The pair finished 10 pounds out of sixth place.
Another area state qualifier, Riley Bohan of Lakewood Ranch, did not record a weight in the clean and jerk and failed to place. She lifted 140 pounds in the bench press.
VENICE DUALS -- Chase Washington defeated two state-ranked wrestlers to finish 5-0 in the 138-pound weight class and lead Palmetto to a 3-2 record in a tournament won by host Venice.
The Tigers defeated Bayshore (54-18), Sarasota Military Academy (48-30) and Southeast (58-24) but lost to Tarpon Springs East Lake (44-27) and Venice (43-23).
Leonel Barboza (152 pounds) also went 5-0 for Palmetto. Aaron McDaniel (120), Thad Johnson (126) and Nathan Heidenreich (285) each went 4-1 for Palmetto.
SPIEGEL MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT -- Lakewood Ranch took fourth place as team at the tournament hosted by Sebring.
Hunter Reed (113 pounds) and Dylan Cameron (126) placed first for the Mustangs.
Fifth-place finishers for Ranch included Zach McCoy in the 145-pound class, Juan Torres in the 152-pound class and Kyle Mathis in the heavyweight 285-pound class.
Logan Bounds placed sixth in the 160-pound class.
