Prep football: IMG's Smith named Junior All-American
IMG Academy defensive back Saivion Smith has been named to the MaxPreps Junior All-American Team.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound St. Petersburg Lakewood transfer recorded 67 tackles, five interceptions and three blocked punts for the Ascenders, who finished 9-1 this season. He scored six non-offensive touchdowns.
Smith, one of 28 players across the country picked for the Junior All-American first team, was a Herald All-Area first-team defensive selection.
Girls basketball: Mustangs fall in Queen of Palms
FORT MYERS -- Lakewood Ranch finished sixth Wednesday at the Queen of Palms Tournament after falling to Haines City 63-50 in overtime.
LaDazhia Williams scored 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Mustangs (13-6). She also made the all-tourney team out of the Emerald Division. Aleah Robinson added 15 points.
Baseball: Yankees acquire relievers from Braves
NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees bolstered their bullpen by acquiring David Carpenter and Chasen Shreve in a trade with the Atlanta Braves.
Carpenter went 6-4 with three saves and a 3.54 ERA in 65 games with Atlanta last year. Shreve made his major league debut in July, and the left-hander allowed one earned run in 12 1/3 innings covering 15 games.
The Braves received minor league left-hander Manny Banuelos in the deal. Banuelos went 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA in 26 games over three stops last season, finishing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Ski jump: Jacobsen wins 2nd Four Hills event
GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany -- Anders Jacobsen of Norway defeated four-time Olympic champion Simon Ammann to win the second ski jumping World Cup of the Four Hills tour.
Jacobsen soared 135.5 meters for the first-round lead and held his nerve with a second jump of 136.5. He finished with 286 points, 6.6 more than Ammann, who had jumps of 138 and 133 meters.
