Local roundup | Bradenton Christian football rolls past Shorecrest; Saint Stephen's cross country advances

Zack Cooper rushed for 145 yards and a pair of touchdowns Thursday night as the Bradenton Christian football team closed its season with a 42-14 rout of host St. Petersburg Shorecrest.

The Panthers rushed for 237 yards and squared their record at 5-5.

"This is our last ballgame, and I'm proud of the effort of our guys and the way they sent the seniors out," BCS head coach Allan Gerber said.

Brett Gerber rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown and threw for 48 yards and a scoring strike to Wade Carter.

Gerber also had 12 tackles. Austin Rill added nine tackles, and Garrett Mitchell had a sack and six tackles.

Shorecrest Prep is 1-6.

Cross country

CLASS 1A-DISTRICT 10 -- Cardinal Mooney's Cal Davidson Turner won an individual championship, and both the Saint Stephen's boys and girls teams advanced to region Thursday at Taylor Park in Largo.

Davidson Turner finished in 16 minutes, 3.9 seconds. He led the Cougars boys to a third-place finish and a trip to the Region 3 meet Nov. 8 in Melbourne.

St. Petersburg Shorecrest Prep won the boys team event with 37 points. Saint Stephen's finished second with 74 points. Henry Howell led the Falcons by placing sixth in 17:36.4.

The top four teams and individuals who placed in the top 15 advanced to the region.

In the girls race, Saint Stephen's claimed the fourth and final region spot with 104 points. Shorecrest Prep won with 52 points.

Katie Pierce paced the Falcons by coming in 14th in 22:34.30.

Among other area runners, Cardinal Mooney's Tatum Weishaar advanced to region by placing third in 21:21.8. Terra Ehrhart of Out-of-Door Academy also made it out by finishing eighth in 22:09.


CLASS 2A-DISTRICT 9 -- Bayshore's T.C. Smith won two individual titles, and Bruins Michelle Narvaez and Victoria Graham participated in two more wins apiece on Tuesday at Avon Park.

Smith won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.83 and the 100 backstroke in 57.11 seconds. Narvaez took the 100 backstroke in 1:01.86, Graham won the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.73, and both swimmers competing in the winning 200 medley relay.

The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for the region meet at Long Center in St. Petersburg. Third- through eighth-place finishers may receive a wild-card berth to region.

Patrick Healy led Southeast by winning the 100 butterfly in 57.69 seconds. Austin Lambert (second, 200 freestyle), Alec Muklewicz (second, 50 freestyle) and Gabby Murphy (second, 100 butterfly) also advanced for the Seminoles.

Bayshore's Narvaez (second, 200 individual medley) also advanced.

Girls soccer

PALMETTO 8, SOUTHEAST  0 -- Jade Adams scored three goals and dished out two assists to lead the visiting Tigers (2-0) to an easy victory in the Seminoles' sesaon opener.

Tanya Campos chipped in with goals and an assist, and Brooke Cutchen, Sarah Duncan and Sarah Liggins also scored goals. Breena Bustle and Alex Mercer had an assist apiece.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 2, VENICE 1 -- Talia Falco scored the game winner with about three minutes remaining on an assist from sister Sophia as the visiting Mustangs improved to 2-0 with both wins coming in Class 4A-District 11 play.

Maria Miller scored on a free kick for Lakewood Ranch's other goal. Danielle Wilson made four saves.

BRADEN RIVER 5, PUNTA GORDA CHARLOTTE 0 -- Carly Provan and Lexi Madrid each scored twice as the host Pirates (1-2, 1-1 Class 4A-District 11) claimed their first victory.

Joanne Gigliotti also scored, and Cammi Lizardi had an assist.

OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 3, TAMPA CARROLLWOOD DAY 1 -- Kimmy Comito, Lexi Murphy and Katie Lang scored the goals, and Abby Bannar made nine saves as the Thunder opened with a victory.
