Prep Sports | Lakewood Ranch Mustangs senior athletes announce college plans

LAKEWOOD RANCH -- Nearly a dozen Lakewood Ranch High seniors on Monday announced their plans to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level in a special ceremony honoring them in the school media center.

The 11 student-athletes represented a variety of sports from various collegiate levels: tennis, golf, cross country, track and field, softball, baseball and football.

Among those signing were the Mohanty brothers, Arnav and Arsav, who won the state doubles tennis championship last month. Shunning offers from some big-time programs, the twins signed with Mercer University in Georgia because the school offered both of them a scholarship.

"We wanted to go where we could follow up our state doubles championship with a national championship and that school is going to give us a chance," Arsav said.

Also announcing her plans was heralded long-distance runner Devin McDermott, who has received a combination of scholarships and plans to run cross country for the University of Florida.

McDermott was one of 24 students named to the Florida High School Athletic Association All-State Academic team lost month and received $1,000 in scholarship money. She could receive another $3,000 if she is named FHSAA Female Athlete of the Year next month.
