Local roundup | Bradenton Christian upsets St. Petersburg Catholic in region softball quarterfinal

BCS softballtrips St. PeteCatholic 8-7

The Bradenton Christian softball team scored two runs on a bunt to take the lead for good Wednesday night on its way to an 8-7 victory over host St. Petersburg Catholic in a Class 3A-Region 3 quarterfinal.

With the score tied at 5 in the top of the fourth inning, Madison Putnam laid down a sacrifice bunt with Hailey Dearlove on third. Dearlove scored on the play, and Rachel Brown came around from second base in the ensuing confusion to give the Panthers a 7-5 lead.

BCS closed it out from there. The Panthers (12-11) advance to meet either Cardinal Mooney or St. Petersburg Northside Christian on Friday.

The Barons (17-5) had advanced to the state final four in each of the past three seasons.

"Our kids hit the ball well. We put the pressure on them," Bradenton Christian head coach Gene Brown said.

Rachel Brown went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs and two stolen bases. Dearlove, the winning pitcher, added two hits and three runs, and Lily DeVirgilis hit an inside-the-park home run.


BAYSHORE 3, GULFPORT BOCA CIEGA 1 -- Tyler Schoppelrey did it all, throwing a two-hitter and hitting a two-run home run to lead the host Bruins into the Class 5A-District 12 title game.

Schoppelrey struck out six and walked two. He had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings.

Bayshore scored its first run in the opening inning. Jerad Paparella singled, stole second and scored on a Justin Lakin single. Both Paparella and Lakin went 2-for-3 for the Bruins (14-12), who advance to meet visit Dunedin at 7 p.m. Friday in the district final.
