Canterburyto reach final

Zach Bessette earned a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Fort Myers Canterbury's John Carlin to lead visiting Saint Stephen's to a 5-1 victory Tuesday in a Class 1A-Region 5 semifinal.

Will DeQuant (6-1, 6-0), Peter Moore (6-0, 6-0) and Harris Dunlap (6-2, 6-1) claimed straight-set singles victories for the Falcons, who advance to visit St. Petersburg Shorecrest in the region final at 3 p.m. Thursday. DeQuant and Moore won their doulbes match 6-2, 6-2.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 7, SEMINOLE OSCEOLA 0 -- The Mustangs had little trouble with the host Warriors, turning in seven straight-set victories for a 7-0 victory in the Class 3A-Region 6 semifinal.

The Mustangs will visit Venice at 3 p.m. Thursday in the region final

Arnav Mohanty, Lakewood Ranch's top singles players, beat the Warriors' Michael Detsis 6-0, 6-0. Mohanty's brother, Arsav, beat Osceola's Jordan Alexander 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Lakewood Ranch's Jacques Swanepoel beat Luke Alexander 7-5, 6-0. The other singles champions for the Mustangs were Leonardo Murri, who beat Alberto Lense 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4, and Richy Zhang, who won 6-1, 6-0 over Jamil Morris at No. 5.

In doubles, the Mohanty brothers teamed to beat Detsis and Lense 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1. Lakewood Ranch's Swanepoel and Zhang were paired in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over the Alexander brothers at No. 2

Girls tennis

CLASS 1A-REGION 5 -- Jennifer Sundstrom and Nicole Johnston won their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, and teamed up to win a doubles match to lead Saint Stephen's to a 4-2 victory at Naples Community School.

The victory sends the Falcons to the region final against the Out-of-Door Academy Thunder. The Thunder will host the match at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Sundstrom defeated Nicole Drab 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match, and Johnston took down Allie Diamond 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Sundstrom and Johnston defeated Drab and Diamond 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.

Saint Stephen's also got a victory from No. 3 singles player Hailey Nicklin, who defeated Alexandra Overdijking 6-1, 6-0.

Baseball

BAYSHORE 6, SOUTHEAST 4 -- Derek Paparella went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs as the host Bruins improved to 12-8.

Leon Cavasos went 52/3 innings, allowing three unearned runs and 10 hits, to get the win. Tyler Schoppelrey struck out the side in the seventh inning for the save.

Jerad Paparella added two hits for Bayshore.

BRADEN RIVER 5, SARASOTA 0 -- Josh Brabson tossed a three-hitter, striking out five and walking one, to lift the Pirates past the visiting Sailors in Class 7A-District 11 play.

Braden River (12-9, 5-5) scored all its runs in the sixth. Ryan Fisher hit a two-run single, and Eric Schappacher laced a three-run triple. Both hitters went 2-for-3.

LAKEWOOD RANCH 3, TAMPA BERKELEY PREP 2 (9) -- Brandon King threw six scoreless innings of relief, and Justin Greenaway knocked in Michael Lolli with the go-ahead run as the visiting Mustangs moved to 15-5.

Seth McGarry homered, and Zack Larson had two hits for Lakewood Ranch.

OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 14, ST. STEPHEN'S 0 -- Chad Tolentino and Mike Roberts recorded the only hits for the host Falcons, who fell to 5-8, 2-4 in Class 3A-District 10.

SARASOTA CHRISTIAN 8, MANATEE HEAT 2 -- The visiting HEAT (13-8, 4-3 Class 3A) got two hits from Andy Robbins.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- Duncan Sikema pitched a one-hitter, leading Bradenton Christian to a 12-2 victory at Sarasota Christian in six innings. Ryan Leunk went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and J.T. Parsons had two hits for the Panthers (8-4). ... Chase Richardson threw a two-hitter, striking out five, as Bayshore earned a 12-0 victory at Southeast in five innings. Michael Rupp had three hits, Devin Whitaker had two hits and three RBIs, and Richardson, Levi Mathis and Jason Clayton each had two hits and two RBIs.

Softball

MANATEE 4, LAKEWOOD RANCH 3 -- Taylor O'Quinn pitched a complete game, striking out five and allowing just four hits to earn her 15th win of the season as the visiting Hurricanes (19-6) edged the Mustangs. O'Quinn also went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored.

Reese Byrne celebrated her birthday by going 2-for-4 with a stolen base, and Kiley King was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, driving home the game-winning run for the Canes.

PALMETTO 10, BAYSHORE 0 (5) -- Auria Mounts allowed two hits, striking out four, and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs at the plate as the Tigers got past the visiting Bruins.

Kendall Vedder led the Palmetto attack by going 4-for-4. Sarah McClintic added three hits and two RBIs, and Alex Bryant and Katelyn Goforth each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

n JV: Palmetto claimed a 14-0 victory over visiting Bayshore. Loma Aylward struck out six and allowed just one hit. Jada Massie had three hits, and Alyssa Johnson had two as the Tigers finished their season 7-9.

Girls lacrosse

CARDINAL MOONEY 14, TAMPA BERKELEY PREP 4 -- Bridget Walsh scored four goals, Haley McCurdy had three, and Holli Canacari put in two as the host Cougars finished the regular season 7-4.
