Local Roundup | Saint Stephen's Falcons roll past ODA to district title

The Saint Stephen’s boys soccer team tallied three second-half goals to pull away from host Out-of-Door Academy on Friday for a 3-0 victory in Class 1A-District 8 final.

The Falcons got goals from freshman Toby Howell, Jorge Zavala and Sam Lynch. Josh Ruckdeschel had a pair of assists, and Matthew Jones had an assist. Goalkeeper Conner McCullen had two saves.

Saint Stephen’s (16-2-1) host Tampa Prep at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in a region semifinal. ODA heads to Largo Indian Rocks Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Juco baseball

STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA 10, MIAMI-DADE COLLEGE 4 -- Josh Clemen pitched gave up five hits and struck out four over five innings as the Manatees opened their season with a victory at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater.

Omar Garcia went 3-for-4 with a double. Devon Raftery also went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Daniel Doziak was 2-for-5.

Manatee product Tyler Rocklein and Lakewood Ranch product Andrew McNett each drove in two runs.

Boys basketball

BRADEN RIVER 58, MANATEE 19 -- The host Pirates wrapped up the regular season crown and the top seed for the Class 7A-District 11 tournament by rolling the Hurricanes behind 16 points from Tre Bryant.

All of Bryant’s points came in the first half, when Braden River (17-4, 8-2) racked up a 35-9 lead. Trevon Young added 13 points and 10 rebounds, Tommy Bernhardt had 11 points, Steven Ross had six assists, and Jeff Casseus had seven rebounds.

Mikelson Jeanbrinvil led Manatee with five points.

SOUTHEAST 48, LAKEWOOD RANCH 45 -- The Seminoles ruined the Mustangs’ Senior Night, featuring the return of Brian Cobb, behind Markcene Jean’s 12 points.

Cobb, a first-team Bradenton Herald All-Area selection in 2010-11 who missed most of the season after suffering an offseason knee injury, scored 11 points to lead Lakewood Ranch.

Jalen Seel had nine points, while Antonio Ray and Andrew Young had eight apiece for Southeast (10-9).

TAMPA BAYSHORE CHRISTIAN 55, SAINT STEPHEN’S 37 -- Jacob Westberry nailed five 3-pointers and scored 17 points, but the Falcons fell on the road to drop to 1-14.

Omar Sammour pitched in with 14 points for Saint Stephen’s.

Girls basketball

PALMETTO 52, BAYSHORE 21 -- Blair Thomas celebrated Senior Night with 17 points, four steals, seven assists and five rebounds to help lead the host Tigers (19-2) past the Bruins.

Alyssa Ward led Palmetto with 18 points. Rolita McDuffie had 10 points and 14 rebounds, and senior Kayla Moore had seven rebounds and two blocks.

Bayshore got eight points from Brooklyn Spearman.
