MAYO — Saint Stephen’s trailed 41-0 at halftime and never recovered Friday night, losing 54-12 at the hands of Lafayette High School.
“We just couldn’t do the basics of football,” Falcons head coach Stan Brown told the Herald by phone as the team bus began its four-hour drive home. “We couldn’t block. We couldn’t tackle.”
Trailing the Hornets 54-0, Saint Stephen’s scored both of its touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Jeremy Perrone hooked up with Erik Schulz on a 35-yard touchdown reception, and Sam Mire scored from two yards out on the ground.
Next up for Saint Stephen’s (1-4) is a homecoming matchup Friday against Moore Haven.
COUNTY TOURNAMENT — At Bayshore on Friday, Braden River beat Saint Stephen’s 25-17, 25-15; Manatee defeated Bradenton Christian 25-21, 25-23; Southeast beat Bayshore 25-11, 25-12; and Palmetto beat Lakewood Ranch 25-20, 25-18.
The tournament continues at 8 a.m. today with the conclusion of pool play and then the playoffs at noon.
Admission is $5.

SFCC TOURNAMENT — SCF swept both of its matches at Avon Park.
The Manatees (18-4) beat Palm Beach State College 25-19, 25-17, 25-15; and Polk State College 25-21, 25-10, 25-23.
SCF sophomore Aurora Newgard, who was named FCCAA player of the week earlier in the day, led the charge with 28 kills, five aces and 20 digs.
Setter Sarah Geraldson had 67 assists, nine kills and 13 digs; Emily Strack 20 kills, two aces and 10 digs; Natalie Gaudreau 16 kills, six aces and 17 digs; and Abby Gaiotti 17 digs and two aces.
