Blazers top Thunder to win district

BRADENTON - The Sarasota Christian girls basketball team showed why it is the top seed in the Class 1A-District 12 tournament with a convincing 64-40 win over the Out-Of-Door Academy Thunder on Saturday at Bradenton Christian.

The Blazers came out strong, scoring the first seven points of the game in less than three minutes. The Thunder, plagued by several turnovers, fouls and missed shots, could only muster four points in the opening stanza that saw Sarasota Christian open up a 17-4 lead.

"We came out strong and were ready to answer," Blazers coach Steve Fisk said. "I think these girls were really prepared mentally."

Courtney Waggoner and Erin Kane both hit 3-pointers for the Thunder early in the second, cutting the deficit to 12. Then the Blazers, led by Meagan Fisk's second 3-pointer of the night, went on a 9-4 run that saw them eventually take a commanding 40-19 lead into the half.

Waggoner scored six quick points to bring the Thunder to within 15 in the third. Then, with three minutes left, the Blazers reeled off 11 straight points, taking an insurmountable 26-point lead into the final period.

"It was all about defense (Saturday night)," said Fisk, who led all scorers with 18 points. "They're a physical team, and we knew they were going to come out strong. We knew this was going to be a tough game coming out."

"We knew what we had to do, and we came out, played hard, and now our plan is to see them again in the playoffs," said ODA coach Carl Williams.

The Thunder will travel to Clearwater Lakeside Chrisitian at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
