Canes, Bruins ousted

LAKEWOOD RANCH - After trimming Venice's lead to 25-22 at halftime, Manatee High's boys basketball team was in position to upset the No. 2 seed in the opening game of the Class 5A-District 12 tournament at Lakewood Ranch High.

But playing three against five - at least when it came to scoring points - proved too large an obstacle. The Indians pulled away for a 52-38 victory, advancing to Friday's semifinals.

The night turned into a washout for Manatee County teams in the second game. No. 1 seed Punta Gorda Charlotte used a suffocating full-court press to jump to a 21-2 lead and cruised to an 84-52 victory against injury-depleted Bayshore.

Today's first-round games feature host Lakewood Ranch against Southeast at 6 p.m., followed by Port Charlotte against North Port.

In Tuesday's first game, only three players scored for the Hurricanes (7-15): Anthony Bennett, Ace Sanders and Dion Shorey. The rest of the Canes managed only five shots against the deliberate Indians (17-9).

Venice received 15 points from Kyle Abney and 12 from Tyler Christian.

Indians coach Steve Cavallaro said he was concerned with Manatee's athleticism and quickness, but his players controlled the tempo throughout.

"Manatee is a much better team than when they started the season," Cavallaro said. "(Coach Brian) Reeves has them focused and doing things with a purpose."

As much as Bayshore tried focusing against Charlotte, the Tarpons (20-6) looked like a blur on the horizon. They forced the Bruins (5-20) into 21 turnovers in the first half.

Timmy Snyder, a 6-foot-7 forward, scored 20 for Charlotte despite sitting out the fourth quarter. Braun Balsai led the Bruins with 17, and fellow senior Chris Chawi added 13.

"I think we tried to force things too much," Balsai said. "We weren't calm enough with the ball."

"I'm proud of the fact the kids kept fighting and playing after we fell behind," said Bruins coach Chris Brady. "When Charlotte plays unselfishly like (Tuesday night) and moves the ball to the open man, it's a difficult team to contend with."
