Hunt finds his shot in Southeast's win

BRADENTON - The past couple of basketball games, Korey Hunt was lacking confidence in his shot. On Thursday night, Hunt found his rhythm as he knocked down jumpers from various areas of the court against Bayshore.

Hunt's hot hand helped Southeast breeze by the host Bruins 65-44 in a Class 5A-District 12 matchup on Thursday night.

"Our point guard drove (the lane) real good (Thursday night), and dished it out," said Hunt, who led his team in scoring with 23 points. "When I got it I just tried to shoot with confidence."

In the first quarter, the Noles (9-9, 7-5) jumped out to a quick 19-4 lead and never looked back.

Southeast's defensive pressure gave the Bruins (4-14, 2-10) fits all night as Bayshore played without point guard and leading scorer Phil Garrett, who suffered a knee injury last week and is done for the season.

The Noles forced Bayshore into 31 turnovers.

"They are a solid, quick team that likes to pressure the ball," Bruins coach Chris Brady said, "and that's one of our weaknesses. We got put to the test (Thursday night)."

Chris Chawi led the Bruins in scoring with 11 points.

The last time these two teams met, Southeast won by only five points, and Southeast coach Elliot Washington said he wanted his team to be more aggressive on defense.

"We wanted to create turnovers and limit Derrick Hawkins' touches (Thursday night)," Washington said. "I think we were successful with that."

The Noles' Mike Bacon helped Hunt in the scoring department with 10 points.

Washington said his team hasn't performed well the past few games and is hoping Thursday's win can get his team on the right track.

"A win is always good," Washington said. "My team has kind of played bad in spots lately, and we weren't focused. Getting a win against a county team was good, and it's also was a district win, so we want to stay focused and get ready for Manatee next week."
