Tigers hoops holds off late Cougars' rally

After holding a 10-point lead through most the game, the Palmetto High boys basketball team escaped overtime Wednesday night.

Palmetto won 49-46 when Cardinal Mooney's potential game-tying, half-court shot missed after making four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Joe Hills led the Tigers with a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds).

JV: Palmetto's Trey Yarn had 18 points, and Samuel Silas made his first-ever dunk to lead the Tigers (12-1) to a 56-40 victory over Cardinal Mooney.

Kelly Cline connected on a free kick off of senior Sarah Johnston's assist, and Alyssa Hernandez and Miranda Scott also scored.

Noelle Pineiro scored three goals, and Megan McCurdy also scored in the visiting Cougars' (8-6-1) victory over the Thunder.

Pineiro, Kaitlyn Hennessy, Lauren MacKinnon and Lauren Milholland each had an assist for Cardinal Mooney.

Rachel Cannon scored ODA's lone goal.

The visiting Tigers (12-7) beat the Marauders for the first time, thanks in part to Adam Tanner's pin at 1:36 of the 215-pound match.

Jeff McCloskey (103 pounds, 3:16), Trevor Bishop (112, 1:24), Daniel Coulter (125, 1:30), Randy Coulter (152, 3:47) and Carey Kizer (160, 5:49) also pinned their opponents.

Tanner improved to 19-0 this season, and McCloskey is 11-0.

Braden River tri-meet

Southeast (10-7) defeated host Braden River 51-27 and Sarasota Booker 57-6.

Edison Dohns (130 pounds), Matt Talbert (135), Anthony Torro (145), Chet Scott (160), Ryan Broder (215) and Alex Duval (heavyweight).

Andrew Fulk (189 pounds) and Richie Cunningham (215) remained undefeated for the season as the Hurricanes (10-3) dominated the host Indians.

Five other Manatee wrestlers pinned their opponents - Mike Torres (105), Daniel Betz (140), James Lloyd (171), Kobie Reynolds (171) and Richard Dahlin (heavyweight).

Bruins graduate Eric Reynolds won his professional debut in the Mixed World Fighting Championships with a first-round technical knockout of Shane Ometri of New Port Richey at the A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa. The performance helped the Team EMK fighter capture the event's Turf War Belt.
