Juco baseball: SCF eliminated at state tourney
LAKELAND -- Palm Beach State pushed across the game's only run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday, eliminating the State College of Florida baseball team from the state tournament.
Todd Isaacs drove home pinch-runner Raul Cortes for the 1-0 victory in the elimination bracket of the Florida College System Activities Association tournament at Joker Marchant Stadium.
SCF starting pitcher Taylor Cockrell was a hard-luck loser after a duel with a Palm Beach State's Parker Danciu.
Cockrell, who threw just 79 pitches, gave up four hits and no walks and struck out four. Three of the hits were collected by No. 9 hitter Jean Cancio, who singled with one out in the ninth. Cortes replaced him and scored on Isaacs' hit.
Danciu allowed six hits and no walks and struck out seven. Mitch Piatnik and Brantley Bell had two hits apiece apiece for the Manatees.
SCF finished the season 39-18.
Tennis: Djokovic, Sharapova win in Rome
ROME -- Top-ranked Novak Djokovic returned from three weeks off and showed some signs of rust in a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 win over Spanish opponent Nicolas Almagro at the Italian Open
Djokovic was poised to close the match out in straight sets with a 5-2 lead in the tiebreaker but Almagro won five consecutive points to force a third.
In women's action, top-ranked Serena Williams cruised past 39th-ranked Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 6-3 in just over an hour; and Maria Sharapova, a Manatee County resident, opened her bid for a third Rome title with a second-round win over 52nd-ranked Jarmila Gajdosova. The third-seeded Sharapova was leading 6-2, 3-1 when her Australian opponent retired with a right shoulder injury.
