SCF softballclosing in on1st state title

The State College of Florida softball team is one victory closer to the first state championship in program history.

The Manatees defeated Gulf Coast State College 2-1 in eight innings Saturday in Pensacola when Angie Dascoli scored the winning run on an Ashley Brooks groundout in the Gulf District Championship game at the Florida College System Athletics Association state tournament.

SCF advanced to the district title game at 11 a.m. today against an opponent that was to be determined late Saturday. A victory would send the Manatees to the state final against the Atlantic District champion. Both district champs advance to the national tournament May 17-20 in St. George, Utah. Today's opponent must beat SCF (3-0 in the tournament) twice to claim the district title.

Dascoli and Ashley Burney each had three hits for the Manatees on Saturday. Paige Mathews tossed a four-hit complete game, allowing a run and striking out eight.
