Women's tennis | State College of Florida wins state championship

TAMPA -- It didn't take the State College of Florida women's tennis program to become a Sunshine State powerhouse.

The Manatees won seven of the nine singles and doubles titles Saturday to cruise to their first state championship, winning the Florida College Systems Activities Association tournament at Hillsborough Community College, in just the second year of the program's existence.

SCF scored 25 points, outdistancing second-place Broward Community College by 9.5 points.

The title sends the Manatees to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament May 6 to 13 in Tyler, Texas. SCF is ranked No. 2 in the nation behind the host, Tyler Junior College.

SCF's Mariana Palacios, Lai Wei, Ann-Sophie Porry, Abby Martinez and Lacey Lapp all won individual state singles titles with straight set victories. The Manatee's top singles player, Laurence Porry, dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to St. Petersburg College's Greta Veinberga in the final.

Porry and Palacios won the No. 1 doubles championship, and Martinez and Lapp took the No. 3 doubles crown.
