Women's tennis | State College of Florida marching toward state championship

TAMPA -- The State College of Florida women's tennis team is poised for a run at the Florida College Systems Activities Association title after sweeping six matches Friday in the opening day of competition at Hillsborough Community College.

The Manatees led the team competition with 16 points, two more than Broward Community College, and have all six of their singles players and three doubles players going for titles today.

No. 1 singles player Laurence Porry (6-3, 6-0), No. 2 singles player Mariana Palicios (6-2, 7-6), No. 3 singles player Wei Lai (6-2, 6-4), No. 4 singles player Ann-Sophie Porry (6-2, 6-1), No. 5 singles player Abby Martinez (6-3, 7-6) and No. 6 singles player Lacey Lapp (6-3, 6-4) all posted victories Friday.

The No. 3 doubles team of Martinez and Lapp won 8-3 to advance to the semifinals.

The top three teams in the state competition advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament May 6 to 13 in Tyler, Texas.

After SCF and Broward, St. Petersburg College has nine points, Florida State College at Jacksonville has eight points, and Hillsborough Community College has seven.
