Local roundup: Pirates roll in playoff opener

Braden River had little trouble in the first round of the Class 4A-District 10 Tournament.

The Pirates peppered visiting Seminole Osceola 55-16 on Tuesday during a quarterfinal, and head to second-seeded Lakewood Ranch at 7 p.m. today in a semifinal.

Caitlyn Benedetto had 18 points, and Erica Zlisson added nine for the third-seeded Pirates (14-12), while Alexis Stout grabbed eight rebounds.

CLASS 2A-DISTRICT 11 TOURNAMENT -- Maili Willamson had 15 points and 15 rebounds, but visiting Saint Stephen’s fell 46-24 at host St. Petersburg Admiral Farragut in a Class 2A-District 11 quarterfinal.

The Falcons (1-19) were down 13 points at the half, but got within eight at one point.

Boys basketball

BRADENTON CHRISTIAN 82, PALMETTO 73 -- Daniel Magley had 21 points to lead the host Panthers past the Tigers.

Magley grabbed eight rebounds and dished out eight assists for BCS (14-10), while Adam Lee added 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Adam Walker had 15 points.

The Panthers play for the Bay Conference Championship on Thursday at home against Clearwater Calvary Christian.

Jordan Smith had 22 points for the Tigers, while Terrance Mann added 14.

JUCO softball

SCF 10-5, COLLEGE OF CENTRAL FLORIDA 0-4 -- The host Manatees swept a doubleheader, taking the first game by virtue of the 10-run rule and adding a come-from-behind win in the second game.

In Game 1, freshman pitcher Chelsea Oglevie threw a five-innng no-hitter, walking two, while Stephanie Shoup, went 2-for-2 with a three-run home run. Kelsey Maffucci doubled and scored two runs for SCF (6-0).

Ingrid Cabrera pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win in the nightcap, while Cortney Sadler was 2-for-3 and drove in the winning run. Angie Dascoli added a home run for the Manatees.
