BRADENTON — What caught La’Tece Luther’s eye about Webber International was how close to home it is.
The Bayshore High product signed with the NAIA school located in Babson Park near Lake Wales on Tuesday in the State College of Florida gymnasium.
“I just wanted to play somewhere close to home where my family could watch me play,” Luther said.
Luther played last season at SCF, and her bat and catching ability drew Warriors coach Bobby Green’s attention. Green is in his first year with the program.
“The first time I saw her play, I was watching her play in a game over against South Florida,” Green said. “The wind was blowing in and she hit a ball out that was just the power. I watched her receive the ball — she caught the ball very well — and then when I saw her throw, I said ‘I want her.’”
Luther was a member of the Manatees’ Suncoast Conference champion club that made it to the state tournament under head coach Meredith Headings.
“I’ve never let a catcher call games before,” Headings said. “And she is so intelligent, and such a student of the game that we allowed her to call pitches ... she did a fantastic job. She knows what she’s doing.”
