2010 State College of Florida capsules

Alex Burgos, so., SP

2010 stats: 13-1, 1.42 ERA, 109 Ks, 95 1/3 IP, 1.13 WHIP.

Background: Became the staff ace after playing summer league ball in Minnesota. The Florida Southern-bound left-hander threw two gems this season, including a complete game victory in the state title win en route to winning the Most Outstanding Pitcher award for the state tournament.

Favorite baseball memory: The final out in the state championship game, which gave SCF its first JUCO World Series berth since 2002.

Austin Chubb, so., C

2010 stats: .347, 4 HRs, 36 RBIs, 33 runs, .431 OBP.

Background: Redshirted following Tommy John surgery his first year, and last year suffered a fractured elbow and fractured his cheekbone in five places. The Lake Mary native is making the most of his first full season at SCF.

Favorite baseball memory: At 16, Chubb and his Longwood Babe Ruth teammates advanced to the Babe Ruth World Series in Weimar, Texas.

L.B. Dantzler, fr., IF

2010 stats: .286, 31 runs, 400 OBP.

Background: A Winter Haven High product, Dantzler led a 24-1 and No. 1-ranked Class 5A team his senior year, but a 2-1 loss in districts off four infield hits derailed a state run.

Favorite baseball memory: In junior year at Winter Haven, after three losses to Lakeland George Jenkins, Dantzler’s squad got revenge in the regional semis. He also was a bat boy for five years for the Cleveland Indians in spring training. He says Ellis Burks was the nicest big leaguer he met.

Bobby Dixon, so., RP

2010 stats: 3-0, 0.60 ERA, 9 saves, 28 Ks.

Background: A 2008 Bayshore grad, Dixon threw a 140-pitch complete game to beat Charlotte in the first round of the district tournament.

Favorite baseball memory: Going to Williamsport, Pa., to see his cousin Larry Cobb and the rest of the Manatee East Little League team compete in the 1997 Little League World Series.

Anthony Figliolia, so., IF

2010 stats: .310, 21 RBIs, 40 runs.

Background: Figliolia went to Winter Springs High pitching a perfect game and no-hitter as freshman.

Favorite baseball memory: Winning the JUCO state tournament with SCF.

Nick Goody, fr., RP/IF

2010 stats: 2.75 ERA, 2 saves, 22 K’s.

Background: While playing at University High in Orlando, he homered off West Orange’s Blake Dieterich, who is now at Georgia.

Favorite baseball memory: Winning districts as senior at University High.

Steven Leasure, fr., SP/RP

2010 stats: 4-2, 3.81 ERA, 41 Ks, 16 walks, 52 IP, 1.48 WHIP

Background: Fanned 53 batters in 56 2/3 innings as a Manatee High senior last year. Sported a 1.48 ERA as Canes made state tournament as district runners-up.

Favorite baseball memory: Outdueling Port Charlotte pitcher David Holmberg last season in the Class 5A-District 12 semifinals at Manatee.

Josh Lucas, fr., SP

2010 stats: 5-4, 4.26 ERA, 69 2/3 IP.

Background: Selected by Toronto Blue Jays in 39th round of 2009 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft after a stellar senior year at Lakeland High. Lucas posted an 8-1 record with a 0.49 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 63 innings that season.

Favorite baseball memory: During his junior and senior years at Lakeland High, Lucas threw complete game victories over current SCF teammate L.B. Dantzler’s Winter Haven High.

Hunter Ovens, so., OF

2010 stats: .342, 6 HRs, 34 RBIs, 39 runs, .404 OBP.

Background: Redshirted football at Virgina Tech before transferring to SCF for baseball last season. Ovens played both sports at Cardinal Mooney, where he was an All-State selection in both.

Favorite baseball memory: Winning the JUCO state tournament with SCF.

Brandon Patterson, fr., C

2010 stats: .293, 13 RBIs.

Background: Helped Auburndale win a district title, the school’s first since his brother Brian’s team in 2002.

Favorite baseball memory: Hit first career homer as a 13-year-old when his AAU team, the Lakeland Renegades, was competing in a tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Grant Porter, fr., RP

2010 stats: 3-1, 5.74 ERA, 19 Ks, 26 2/3 IP.

Background: Played varsity all four high school years and began pitching as a junior. Posted 0.94 ERA with 99 Ks while batting .447. He was named to the All-State Second Team.

Favorite baseball memory: On 10th birthday, Porter hit walk-off homer to send the Lakeland City 9-10 All-Stars to state Little League tournament.

Josh Renfro, so., SP

2010 stats: 6-2, 2.97 ERA, 65 Ks, 69 2/3 IP.

Background: Played at Sarasota High, where he helped Sailors to Class 6A state title in 2007.

Favorite baseball memory: Beating St. Pete College in state tourney. Renfro says it’s the most meaningful game he’s tossed. He hurled 7 2/3 shutout innings, striking out eight.

Tyler Rocklein, fr., OF

2010 stats: .335, 5 HRs, 48 RBIs.

Background: Manatee graduate helped Hurricanes make the regional playoffs as a senior.

Favorite baseball memory: His walkoff hit over Palm Beach State College at this month’s state tournament.

Michael Shreves, fr., RP

2010 stats: 0-2, 2.41 ERA, 23 Ks, 1.50 WHIP.

Background: Initially played at Bayshore before transferring to Manatee to play under former SCF player Dwayne Strong. Hit .295 as a senior.

Favorite baseball memory: Winning district title at Bayshore as a junior after entering with a 3-24 record for forfeiting games played earlier in the season because of an ineligible player.

Austin Smith, so. OF

2010 stats: .305, 4 HRs, 42 runs, 27 SB.

Background: One of three UCF transfers, Smith played high school ball at Winter Springs High where he hit .390 as senior.

Favorite baseball memory: Competing in Little League tourney at age 12 on Winter Springs Warriors at Cooperstown Dreams Park.

Colton Speed, fr., IF

2010 stats: .302, 30 runs, 23 RBIs, 9 SB, .400 OBP.

Background: Was Mr. Football finalist in Tennessee. He chose baseball due to size (5-foot-9, 175 pounds).

Favorite baseball memory: The dogpile. SCF players formed a giant dogpile following final out in the state title game, and Speed says he never had participated in a dogpile before.

Paul Stortini, fr., DH

2010 stats: .354, 4 HRs, 32 RBIs, 10 doubles, .403 OBP.

Background: Came to SCF from Ocean City, Md., where his hitting coach was a member of the 1991 Manatee CC team that played in the JUCO World Series.

Favorite baseball memory: Winning state title to earn trip to Grand Junction.

Jeremy Strawn, fr., RP

2010 stats: 3-0, 4.15 ERA, 32 Ks, 20 BB, 30 1/3 IP, 1.32 WHIP.

Background: Posted 5-3 mark with 1.42 ERA and 72 Ks as Manatee High senior. He received All-State honors.

Favorite baseball memory: Winning 2009 American Legion state title as member of Kirby Stewart Post 24. Helped Manatee reach regionals in ’09.

Dan Watson, so., RP

2010 stats: 0-0, 10.80 ERA, 5 IP.

Background: Drafted out of Manatee High in 2006 by Orioles but opted to play at South Florida CC. Now at SCF, he’s a second-generation Manatee after father, Steve, and uncle, Rick Langford, who both pitched in majors.

Favorite baseball memory: Meeting Pirates legend Bill Mazeroski, who hit famous homer in 1960 World Series.

B.J. Zimmerman, fr., IF

2010 stats: .311, 4 HRs, 39 RBIs, 34 runs, .450 OBP.

Background: Led Kissimmee Osceola in all hitting categories and Osceola County in RBIs his senior year. Made All-County all four years and made regional semifinals his freshman and senior seasons. Transferred to SCF from UCF.

Favorite baseball memory: Winning state JUCO title this year.

Tim Hill, head coach

Background: Where do you start with the Hall of Fame head coach? He’s making his fifth appearance at the JUCO World Series, where the Manatees look to earn the program’s first national title. In his 29 seasons at SCF, Hill has made 24 trips to the state tournament, including a state-record 15 straight. He’s won more than 1,000 games at SCF.

Tim Hill II, assistant coach

Background: The son of head coach Tim Hill, the younger Hill is in his 12th season as an assistant. Hill II is a former SCF player and spent time in the Florida State League as an assistant general manager for the Fort Lauderdale and Sarasota Red Sox during the 1993-94 seasons.

Barry Batson, assistant coach

Background: In his fourth season as an SCF assistant, Batson was an assistant coach for a slew of area high schools. He also was the head coach of the Manatee HEAT.

Nick Graham, assistant coach

Background: Played last season as a catcher/outfielder for SCF, but now is in his first year on the coaching staff where he throws batting practice, works with catchers and assists with infield and outfield drills.
