Feb. 21: CB's Saltwater Outfitters, 1249 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota, will have an Orvis-Endorsed fly fishing school from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 21. Located on Siesta Key, the school will cover fly casting basics, line control, shooting line and the roll cast. Instructor Capt. Rick Grassett, also will cover leader construction, fly selection and saltwater fly fishing techniques. The course, designed for beginning and intermediate fly casters, will focus on basics but also work with intermediate casters on correcting faults and improving casting skills. March 1: The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine will hold its inaugural Run Through the Groves 5k at 8 a.m. March 1 at Mixon Fruit Farms. March 2: Saint Stephen's Episcopal School will hold a new Olympic Soccer Academy program to be hosted at the Moore Athletic Complex at Turner Fields starting March 2. The program is under the leadership of former U.S. Men's Soccer Olympic coach and Saint Stephen's Associate Athletic Director Tim Mulqueen and is open to public students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The training strategy for the Olympic Soccer Program features speed and agility exercises, technical and functional training based on the U.S. Soccer National Curriculum and team tactical work. The Olympic Soccer Program starts March 2 and runs on subsequent Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15-4:15 p.m. until May 6 with the exception of March 30-April 7 for spring break. Participants will have the option of participating the eight Monday sessions ($160), the nine Wednesday sessions ($180) or all 17 sessions ($300). March 23: The Pittsburgh Pirates and Bradenton Marauders are accepting registration for the sixth annual Baseball Basics for Women clinic presented in partnership with Manatee Memorial Hospital. The clinic is intended for young adult and adult women interested in learning or refining their baseball fundamentals. It will be held from 6;30-8:30 p.m. March 23 at McKechnie Field. The registration fee is $45. Pirates major and minor league players and coaches will instruct participants in hitting, catching, running the bases, and fielding. Each of the women also will receive a free T-shirt, a goodie bag filled with prizes and a ticket to the March 28 game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Gecko's Grill & Pub will provide dinner after the clinic. The Kona Bar built by NDC Construction will be open for family members and guests during the clinic and for participants during dinner. All participants will be entered in a raffle for a ceremonial first pitch opportunity for the March 28 game. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Manatee Memorial Foundation. The Manatee Memorial Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports the health-related needs of the Manatee County community. Community healthcare needs and scholarships for medical education are the benefactors of the Foundation.
