College baseball: Manatees win slugfest
BRADENTON -- The State College of Florida Manatees outslugged the Florida State College at Jacksonville, beating the Blue Wave 12-8 on Sunday at G.T. Bray park.
SCF's Brad Zunica lead the Manatees' offensive attack and picked up the win on the mound. The Lakewood Ranch product pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief, fanning two and allowing one hit.
At the plate, Zunica was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Also having big days for SCF (6-1) were Kevin Buckley (3-for-5, three RBIs) and Brantley Bell (2-for-4, two RBIs).
College tennis: No. 12 SCF rolls to victory
BRADENTON -- The State College of Florida women's tennis team, ranked No. 3 in the nation, defeated No. 12-ranked Florida State College at Jacksonville 7-2.
Singles match winners for the Manatees (3-0) were Natella Nabieva at No. 1, Miranda Talbert (No. 2), Sarah Peek (No. 3) and Ameina Houston (No. 6).
The Manatees swept the Blue Wave (4-2) in doubles matches with victories by Nabieva and Peek, Talbert and Mikala Lowrence and Houston and Casey O'Toole.
Football: Gladiators pound Orlando Phantoms
BRADENTON -- The Southwest Florida Gladiators minor-league football team improved to 2-0 for the season with a 22-10 victory Saturday over the Orlando Phantoms.
Gladiators wide receiver Bonsavior Bean gave himself a birthday gift by scoring the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter.
Phillip Chaltis added a field goal that gave the Gladiators 10-3 lead going into the half.
In the third quarter, each team scored a touchdown.
With 13:47 left in the fourth quarter, Gladiators running back C. Alonco Carnes broke the tie with a touchdown, but the extra point was blocked.
With only 30 seconds left in the game, Gladiators defensive back Bruce Kelly intercepted a long pass and ran it back for a touchdown as time expired.
