Manatees fall in state final match
The State College of Florida volleyball team saw its 22-match winning streak end Saturday at the Florida College System Activities Association state tournament.
Miami Dade College swept the Manatees 3-0 to claim the state championship.
Still, SCF (27-5) will advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament Nov. 20-22 in Casper, Wyo. The top two teams in the state tournament earned bids.
The Manatees are ranked ninth in the NJCAA Division I poll. They won the Suncoast Conference championship. Head coach Lonnie Wilson was named the conference's coach of the year, and sophomore outside hitter Maja Risti was the conference's player of the year. Setter Lea Lieb and middle blocker Susi Peonia were first-time all-conference picks.
PALM BEACH STATE COLLEGE 77, SCF 58 -- The Manatees suffered their second consecutive loss at the Battle of the Beach tournament, falling to the Panthers.
Gustavo Leon led the way for SCF (1-3) by scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Travis Mitchell chipped in with 11 points.
After missing all 16 of their 3-point attempts on Friday, the Manatees hit just 1 of 11 trey tries Saturday.
