Oct. 18: The Firearms Training Institute of Sarasota will host an NRA First Steps Pistol Course at 8 a.m. Oct. 18 at the AmericInn Hotel Conference Room, 5931 Fruitville Road. The course will be taught by local NRA Certified Instructors and cover the basics of safe gun handling and shooting. The four-hour course will emphasize the safe and proper handling and use of pistols. Participants will learn about firearm safety, parts and operation, shooting fundamentals, maintenance, storage options and much more. This course meets the Florida training requirements for Concealed Carry Permit applicants. Non-residents also are eligible. Oct. 18: CB's Saltwater Outfitters, 1249 Stickney Point Road on Siesta Key, will hold an "Orvis Fly Fishing 101" clinic with Orvis-Endorsed fly fishing guides Capt. Ed Hurst, Capt. Kelly Stilwell, Capt. Rick Grassett and Capt. Andy Cotton from 9-11 a.m. Oct. 18. The cost for the clinic is $20 and will include fly tackle rigging basics and fly casting. Oct. 18-19, Nov. 15-16, Dec. 13-14: The Project Appleseed rifle marksmanship clinic will be held Oct. 18- 19, Nov. 15-16 and Dec. 13-14 at the Manatee Gun and Archery Club, 1805 Logue Road, Myakka City. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The clinic starts at 8:30 a.m. and will continue until 5 p.m. both days. Participants are taught fundamental rifle marksmanship skills to allow a rifleman to be accurate out to 400 yards, with iron sights, a standard rifle and surplus ammunition. Most of the instruction at a Project Appleseed event is conducted on the firing range at 25 yards, at reduced size targets to simulate 100 to 400 yards. Students will learn safe gun handling, proper use of a rifle sling and Revolutionary War history. Participants should bring ear/eye protection, a rifle with sling, ammunition, rifle mat, bug repellent, hat, sunscreen, a packed lunch, snacks, drinks and plenty of water. A .22-caliber rifle is recommended due to the cost of ammunition, but you can use a centerfire rifle if preferred. About 500 rounds of ammunition will be needed per weekend. The clinic fees are $60 for adults, $20 for youth younger than 18 and free to active-duty military, law enforcement officers with ID and elected officials. Oct. 25: Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers and the Sarasota Chapter of Coastal Conservation Association will hold the 10th annual Fall Fly Fishing Challenge on Oct. 25. The catch, photo and release, fly fishing only event will feature an Open Division, for guides and guided anglers (all anglers are eligible to compete in the Open Division) and a Fly Angler Division (no guides). In the Open Division, eligible species include snook, redfish and spotted sea trout. Those in the Fly Angler Division will fish for a variety of species, including snook, redfish, spotted sea trout, bluefish, ladyfish, flounder, snapper, jack crevalle, pompano and permit based on a point-per-inch system. The entry fee is $50 and includes an awards barbecue following the tournament at the Meadows Community Association building, 2004 Longmeadow, Sarasota. Nov. 22: CB's Saltwater Outfitters, an Orvis Outfitter of the year, 1249 Stickney Point Road, Sarasota, will hold an Orvis-Endorsed fly fishing school from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Located on Siesta Key, the school will cover fly casting basics, line control, shooting line and the roll cast. The instructor, Capt. Rick Grassett, also will cover leader construction, fly selection and saltwater fly fishing techniques. The course, designed for beginning and intermediate fly casters, will focus on basics but also work with casters on correcting faults and improving casting skills.
