The first round of Monday's sectional qualifier at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto for this month's United States Open is in the books.
There are five golfers with ties to Manatee County in the field of 58. They are each vying for one of three berths into the U.S. Open, scheduled for June 14-17 at the famed Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Palmetto resident Sam Osborne entered the afternoon round just one shot outside the top three. The Englishman fired a 1-under par 71 on Black Diamond's Quarry Course. He began the second 18 with birdies on Nos. 1 and 2, but has since dropped a couple shots. Osborne is currently tied for sixth place with a 1-under par cumulative total. He has only nine holes remaining in his round.
IMG Academies golfer Daniel Jaramillo struggled to an 85 in the morning round and is not in contention this afternoon to progress.
The other three players with area connections all advanced from the local qualifier held at Waterlefe Golf & River Club in May.
Arnond "Bank" Vongvanij, a Bradenton Prep alum, shot 73 earlier today. However, he's since climbed the leaderboard and sits at even-par, tied for 10th place.
Vongvanij's teammate at the University of Florida, Andres Echavarria, had a 76 in the morning round. IMG'er Rigel Fernandes also carded a 76. They are tied for 25th.
Waterlefe medalist Jeff Leonard, who resides in Tampa, shot 75 in the morning portion.
Echavarria, Fernandes and Leonard's second round scores were not listed as of yet.
