Golf Plus | Rymer starts strong at Q-School's 2nd stage

n Former IMG and Florida State University standout Tommy Rymer turned in a solid, 2-under-par 70 in his opening round at Brooksville’s Southern Hills Plantation, one of several venues for this week’s second stage of PGA Tour Q-School.

The native Minnesotan was tied for 25th after the first round Tuesday. Rymer’s fellow West Florida Golf Tour competitor and former three-time PGA Tour winner Robert Gamez began the event tied for second following a 7-under par 65.

Former Bradenton Prep and University of Florida standout Arnond “Bank” Vongvanij is in Plantation, along with WFGT players Joey Lamielle and Jake Katz.

All three players began their march toward a potential PGA Tour card at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course & Club on Wednesday.

n The Florida State Golf Association announced its player of the year winners for amateur, senior and junior divisions Tuesday. No local players captured awards. Sarasota Christian’s Jin Zhang, who trains at IMG Academies, and Lakewood Ranch High senior Connor Baldwin had the highest finish among local juniors. Zhang tallied 630 points for third place, while Baldwin snagged 355 points for 10th place. West Palm Beach’s Sawyer Shaw was named the junior player of the year with 705 points.

Former Saint Stephen’s and Georgia Tech standout Michael Barbosa, who played in his first U.S. Open this past summer, had the highest finish among amateurs in the area. Barbosa earned 630 points for 11th place. Hobe Sound’s Stephen Anderson (1,145 points) was named the amateur POY for the second straight year. No local seniors cracked the top 15 in that division’s standings.

n On Nov. 1 at University Park, Scott Kuhling aced the 140-yard 5th hole with a 9-iron. Witnesses were Ryan Fountain, Daren Williamson and Pillip Barcessat.

n On Nov. 2 at Peridia, Joe Telesco aced the 153-yard 9th hole with a 3-wood. Witnesses were Joe Telesco, John Saum, John Shaver and Lew Williams.

n On Nov. 5 at Peridia, Judy Connolly aced the 96-yard 8th hole with an 8-iron. Witness was Sandra Lewis.

n On Nov. 9 at Tara Golf and Country Club, Leo Barry aced the 150-yard 4th hole with a 5-hybrid. Witnesses were Larry Weatherbie, Lou Spizzirro and Bruce Erickson.

n On Nov. 10 at Peridia, Cathy Shimko aced the 133-yard 5th hole with a 6-hybrid. Witnesses were Nancy Ruggieri and Jeanne Weber.

n On Nov. 10 at River Wilderness, Barbara Bowen aced the 106-yard 7th hole with a pitching wedge. Witnesses were Ginny Thomas, Sally Wilson and Barbara Cheal.

n On Nov. 13 at Terra Ceia, Jane Martin aced the 111-yard 6th hole with a 5-wood. Witnesses were Ron Martin, Anne Marsden and Bernard Marsden.
