George Steinbrenner dead at 80, source tells AP

TAMPA -- A person close to George Steinbrenner has told The Associated Press that the New York Yankees' owner died this morning.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet made the announcement.

Bay News 9 reported earlier that emergency crews responded to the Tampa home of the longtime New York Yankees owner on Monday night.

Steinbrenner was reportedly taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.

He celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4. He told the Associated Press last week he was "feeling good" after spending a couple hours in his office at the Yankees' spring training complex.

He has been the owner of the New York Yankees since 1973. During that time, the Yankees won 11 pennants and seven World Series titles.
