NASCAR Reporter Claire B. Lang Facing Scrutiny For Kyle Busch Question

As the NASCAR world continues to reel over the sudden passing of Kyle Busch, many have wondered if his death could have been prevented. But one longtime NASCAR reporter's efforts to get that question answered have her in a lot of hot water right now.

NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell did a press conference on Friday ahead of the upcoming Coca-Cola 600. Naturally, the subject of Busch's passing came up but longtime reporter Claire B. Lang made things a little awkward by asking if NASCAR will investigate doing more to help drivers take care of themselves.

"Will NASCAR... do an investigation into helping drivers make sure they're taking care of themselves or use a care center at each track? Will you take a very close look at how that could have happened so quickly (to Busch)?" Lang asked.

O'Donnell wasn't exactly thrilled by the question and admonished Lang for insinuating that they don't do that

"Now's not the time to talk about that and I think you are familiar with the sport and know that we always do that and will continue to do that and will do what's right by Kyle's family," O'Donnell replied.

Wrong time

While many fans understand that it's a fair question for Lang to ask, the timing of it being right within the first 24 hours of Busch's death made it feel inappropriate to a number of them:

"Steve handled it well. I don't have any hate towards anyone wanting to better the condition of drivers, but making a comment days after the loss of one of the sports greatest drivers is a choice. Not necessarily dumb, but definitely the wrong time to ask imo," one user replied on X.

"Claire B Lang is one of the nicest people I've interacted with. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt. I think the question was extremely tough but fair," wrote another.

"It's time for her to be banned and retire."

Not everyone agreed that it was a bad time to ask though. Given how quickly Busch took a turn for the worse, many have pointed out that addressing the issue quickly might be the right idea:

"Not such a stupid question when you read the cause of death. Seemed like she was ahead of everybody else realizing that it may have been preventable."

"Idiots who think thats a stupid question r the reason why these preventative deaths will continue to happen. Kyle Busch should have taken time off to get better and he chose not to. That's what killed him. NASCAR has no fault in that but if they chose to step in he [would] be alive."

"Nothing wrong with the question at all, and even more relevant after the recent news. Clare was bang up, and nailed it."

Do you think it was an appropriate thing for Lang to ask?
