In a recent op-ed piece Rep. Vern Buchanan blames the filibuster by the U.S. Senate for the absence of debate on the Iran deal. To use an old phrase, "Perhaps he should get out of the house" more often, seeing as his article is about eight years too late.
The official statistics may be found at senate.gov, but this, from the Daily Kos, sums it up quite nicely. "Democrats were in the Senate majority for eight years prior to this Congress. Over those eight years, the Senate Republican minority took obstructionism to levels unseen in American history, creating twisted new norms in which 60-vote super-majorities were required for practically every vote of any consequence.
"The institution had never operated this way at any time in its history, but that's the way Mitch McConnell and GOP senators wanted it to be, and the political world simply went along as if it were normal."
