There is a political theory espoused by conservative Republicans. It is called "American Exceptionalism." According to this theory America is No. 1, America is the best, America can do no wrong. We have the best schools, the best medical care, the best business practices, the best roads, the greatest freedoms.
In short, America is the greatest country in the world. Anyone who disagrees with this kind of chauvinism is not only unpatriotic, but perhaps traitorous.
Recent events have shown once again that there is one area in which America's uniqueness is completely undeniable. We are a country whose gun culture permits unparalleled killing of our own citizens. We gun down our high school students; we shoot down our politicians; we massacre our theater-goers; we murder our elementary school toddlers; and most recently we shoot down devout citizens as they prayed.
When it comes to American citizens using guns to kill other American citizens, we are truly exceptional.

If the Founding Fathers could see how we have changed and perverted the meaning of the Second Amendment (which they wrote to protect American citizens' lives), they would stand with heads bowed and weep in shame and sorrow. The Second Amendment is no longer a guarantee of freedom; it has become a license to kill.
