"Activists protest after Animal Services euthanizes 18 dogs." This story was on the front page of the Local/Business section of the June 3 Bradenton Herald. Also in the Herald on the same page was the horrible story of 4-year-old Alexander Marr, who was brutally beaten to death. Trevor Cardarelle, the live-in boyfriend of Dianna Marr and the mother of Alexander Marr, have both been charged in the case.
I love animals and certainly do not condone animal abuse or neglect. There are hundreds of children who die each year in the United States and some in the state of Florida and in Manatee County from abuse and neglect.
There seems to be very little outcry when a child dies from physical abuse or neglect but if an animal is abused or killed, look out. I just feel that some people are more concerned about animal rights and welfare than they are for humans.
In a June 2 story about animal shelter overcrowding, someone at Manatee County Animal Services made the following statement: "Animals give unconditional love, animals are so much better than people a lot of the time. They just need some help. We have to step up and do this."
How about some compassion and concern for children living in dysfunctional homes where the parents or caregivers are many times alcoholics or drug users who probably should have never had children in the first place.
