Time to protest takeover of elections by companies

Today, Jan. 21, marks the fifth anniversary of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision which allows our corrupt political system to flourish. It has literally turned elections into auctions.

Our elected officials no longer represent the people. They represent the private corporations that have funded their campaigns.

The perception of truth has been bought and the messengers, the mainstream media, are making so much money that true unbiased inclusive reporting is a thing of the past. This vicious cycle has to stop, before it is too late. The influence of money has corrupted our entire society.

The looming, inevitable passage of the TPP trade agreement will stimulate the corporate globalization process, bringing on more unemployment here in the states, more privatization of the public services, more deregulation of Wall Street, more cuts to public spending.

The fear of terrorism and governmental intrusion has frozen the general public into compliance with the corporate state. Capitalism is on a collision course with the laws of nature. Nature will prevail in the end. Global warming is civilization's wake up call.

And yet the political pendulum only seems to allow us to envision the extremes of the arch. Compromises are not even discussed.

The Move to Amend Manasota affiliate, committed to the national movement to repeal the Citizen's United decision, is hosting a rally today 4-6 p.m. at the corner of Bahia Vista Road and U.S. 41 in Sarasota to express our concern. Please join us.

Corporations should not be considered people in the eyes of the law, money should not be the ticket to disproportionate access to speech. These premises are destroying our democracy. Time is of the essence. Doing nothing is no longer an option.
