A Dec. 21 letter criticized the "Common Core" education initiative, calling it socialistic. The writer couldn't be more wrong. It is pure capitalism, designed to make money for its advocates.
First, the thing was written partly by Bill Gates (Microsoft), and Microsoft stands to make a bundle on computer programs if it is adopted nationally. So does Jeb Bush, who has formed an organization of online education corporations.
It is part of the Republican effort to privatize public education, in the process getting rid of teacher unions.
How the writer ever got the idea that the United Nations was involved or that it was socialistic has me puzzled.
