Manatee County school board performance sadly lacking

As I walked out of the Oct. 28 school board meeting, I was not sure what I felt most, anger or sadness. What bothered me most?

Was it the threat of yet another lawsuit? The letters from VERY disenchanted teachers? The lack of action taken against a district employee who blatantly lied on a resume? Maybe it was the board member who chose to air student and board issues on their Facebook page.

Whatever it was, the lack of concern portrayed by those people sitting on the dais was frightening. We have some very real issues facing this school district. Parents, if you have children in the Manatee public school system, you need to pay attention to what is happening.

We have a board that makes poor decisions (at best) and cannot get along with each other. We have a chairperson who is not only unprofessional when addressing fellow board members, but also those who speak in front of the board.

It is sad when there were very few positive words spoken to the board tonight. What I heard is what I have heard at every meeting I have attended. There is the frustration at the lack of transparency, the lack of accountability, the very real fear of retaliation.

I urge parents to get involved. These are the most important years of your child's life. We CAN pull together and make a difference. These people work for us!
