Adopt a shelter pet and save a life

I was quoted in an Oct. 8 Herald article in reference to comments I made to the Manatee County BOCC regarding Manatee County Animal Services. I would like to clarify a few points.

I am proud to be a current volunteer at Animal Services. I enjoy working with the staff, other volunteers and, of course, the animals! If you are an animal lover, volunteering at the shelter is a great way to meet new people who share your passion.

In addition, I was quoted saying that the staff members did not like their jobs. I was referring to one of their unpleasant aspects of their job -- euthanizing animals. That part of their job they definitely don't like, but until we, as a community, can stop the flow of homeless pets (by spaying/neutering) and adopt (instead of buy) our next dog or cat, it is a job someone has to do.

The good news is that a lot fewer adoptable animals are being killed, but every life is precious. Please, adopt your next pet and volunteer with an animal rescue!
