Vehicles made in Europe surpass U.S. gas mileage

Not sure if any one else has looked at this but when gas was $1, cars got 20-25 miles per gallon. When gas was $2 they did 25-30 miles per gallon. When it hit $3, they did 30-35. Now it is near $4 and they are doing 40 miles per gallon!

Why can we not have the same cars and engines sold in Europe? The Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus sold here, they claim, do 40 miles per gallon but the versions sold in Europe do over 60 miles per gallon!

Same with the Volkswagen Jetta and Volkswagen Passat. The Fiat 500 does 38 miles per gallon in the U.S. but 65 miles per gallon in Europe.

Is it just me or is there something going on here?
