I am a veteran who did not serve during a major war. I did a stupid thing when I finished high school: I joined the Marine Corps for three years.
I was ready, willing and trained to go to war but there wasn’t one. Now 55 years later, I am a senior citizen in very poor health. The doctors, hospitals and medicine have left us totally broke thanks to our government health plans.
I started going to a veterans hospital when I was 67 and thought I would start using my so-called “VA benefits” and made another mistake. If your head or legs were not blown off and you weren’t in during war time, you receive partial benefits.
My health really declined when I became 70 and could no longer afford my co-payments from the VA. I have asthma, emphysema, high blood pressure, prostate problems and arthritis throughout my back.
I can no longer afford my medicine at the Bay Pines VA facility, so they contacted Social Security, which cut my benefits over $200 and is sending it to the VA for my arrears for medication. Needless to say I will have to stop all of my medication so I can have my Social Security benefits to live on.
Every day you hear how much the government wants to take care of seniors and veterans but this is bureaucratic political talk only.
As a retired veteran, and also a tired senior citizen, the only answer is let the VA have all my retirement benefits. Then I will have absolutely no income and will qualify for Medicare, Medicaid, welfare and food stamps, and not starve.
For you young folks, get a government job or become a politician; then you are guaranteed taxpayers’ money the rest of your life! And you don’t need to know what you are doing.
