Planned Parenthood celebrates 95 years this week -- the anniversary of this country’s first birth control clinic opening in Brooklyn, N.Y. That clinic would lead to the formation of the American Birth Control League, which would eventually become the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Today, Planned Parenthood has grown to be the nation’s leading women’s health care provider and advocate. There are nearly 800 Planned Parenthood health centers nationwide, providing health care services and information to millions of women, men and teenagers every year.
Today, the Planned Parenthood websites receive nearly 3 million visits a month -- visits from real people looking for real health information in real time.
Patients rely on Planned Parenthood for a wide range of preventive health services, for accurate and unbiased information, and for accessible and affordable quality care, including lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control, prevention and treatment of STDs, breast health services, Pap tests, sexual health education and safe abortion care.
Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, with its regional headquarters in Sarasota, is proud to be the nonprofit health care provider that has more than 77,000 patient visits annually. We work every day to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and keep women and families healthy.
As we celebrate this milestone, I would like to applaud our hard-working staff, our dedicated volunteers and our steadfast supporters. They are the reason Planned Parenthood has earned the confidence of American women and families -- and will continue to do so -- for generations to come.
Carolyn Johnson, Chair, Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida Sarasota
