How could this possibly come as a surprise to anyone? A recent Manatee County school district survey of the community found teaching and learning as the greatest priorities. So administrators budgeted 12 percent more for instructional services this year over last year. Good grief, nobody needs a survey to discover schools should be educating children first and foremost.
Tear down that eyesore known as the old Manatee Players theater on Old Main Street. Quickly. The dilapidated structure, abandoned when the city's nationally renowned community theater moved into great new digs on Third Avenue West in March 2014, should be hauled off to the dump. It's useless. Nobody with any sense is going to throw good money into renovating that for anything. What do you do with a sloping theater floor? Level it? At what cost?
This tired building was initially scheduled for demolition last July. Please, Bradenton, quit waiting. And don't use the excuse that somehow citizens will get fond of new green space downtown and fight a land sale. This property is too valuable and should get on the tax rolls.
