The state-of-the-art Mall at University Town Center continues to impress with its technological innovations. While individual stores pitch deals to shoppers via smartphone applications, this week Taubman Centers announced the debut of a remarkable and ground-breaking new app that covers the entire mall.
Taubman, Benderson Development Company's partner in the mall, intends the app to make shopping easier, and more productive, fun and engaging. The free app is currently available for Apple iOS devices while an Android version will be available next year. This is a pilot project for Taubman, which operates properties nationwide and plans to spread the app to most next year.
This debut app lets shoppers view offers throughout the mall, quite an advance beyond single store versions.
Here's the remarkable part: Technology company MXM developed a way to track a shopper's location down to 12 to 18 inches, an advance on global positioning systems. The app can detect floor changes, too, detecting movement from the lower to upper level, for example, and then sending offers from stores the person is nearing.
With its indoor navigation capabilities, the app can direct shoppers to their destinations, too. And even create a shopping itinerary.
While somewhat spooky in its close tracking capability, this is cool stuff for the high-tech set -- "truly a unique amenity for shoppers," one of the technology companies involved in the project stated.
Kudos to Taubman and its partners in the development of this unique app.
