Tropical Depression 9 forms near Mexico

ST. PETERSBURG -- The area of low pressure we have been watching in the Bay of Campeche is now a tropical depression.

Tropical Depression 9 formed over the Bay of Campeche late Tuesday night. A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Mexico from Celestun to Frontera.

The storm is not a threat to Florida.

According to Bay News 9 meteorologist Juli Marquez, it’s currently moving east and could become a tropical storm today. Most of the models have it moving over the Yucatan Peninsula during the next couple of days.

The depression is moving toward the east near 6 mph. On the forecast track, the depression is expected to approach the coast of the Mexican state of Campeche late Wednesday or Wednesday night.

"Computer models show the storm moving over land and weakening," Marquez said. "It could then emerge in the northwest Caribbean Sea."

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts.
