Four killed in head-on crash on Florida road, troopers say

Four people were killed in a head-on crash in Highlands County on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle crash happened just before 12:30 p.m. Christmas Day on State Road 70 at County Road 721 in Lake Placid, according to FHP Lt. Greg Bueno.

According to the FHP crash report, a 16-year-old girl, two women and a man were killed in the crash.

A Buick was going west in the eastbound lane, overtaking other westbound traffic while approaching a curve on State Road 70, according to troopers. A Toyota XA was driving east approaching the same curve.

The front of the Buick collided with the front of the Toyota in the eastbound lane, causing the Buick to overturn into a ditch on the south side of the road, according to FHP. The Buick was engulfed in flames.

The Toyota redirected before coming to a stop.

The driver of the Toyota, Judy Mounts, 56, of Port St. Lucie, and her passenger Destiny Franz, 16, of North Fort Myers, died. Troopers noted in the crash report they were not wearing seat belts .

Troopers are still working to positively identify the driver and passenger in the Buick, according to the report.

Troopers closed State Road 70 near the site of the crash for several hours. The road reopened around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
