Lawmakers may offer redistricting amendment

TALLAHASSEE — Florida lawmakers may offer their own redistricting amendment to counter a pair of citizen initiatives designed to prevent gerrymandering.

Republican sponsors say their proposals, which cleared a Senate committee Friday and a House panel the day before, would just clarify the initiatives on the November ballot.

Initiative supporters, including Common Cause, the League of Women Voters, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and labor unions, say lawmakers are trying to sabotage their efforts.

Their proposals would bar lawmakers from favoring any political party or incumbent when redrawing legislative and congressional districts or abridging the electoral opportunities of racial and language minorities.
