TALLAHASSEE — Community college students soon could face another fee.
The state House has approved a bill authorizing community colleges to add a maximum $6-per-credit-hour transportation fee to the already long list of fees shouldered by students. Proceeds could be used only to offset the cost of bus and other transportation services at each college.
The bill passed the House on a 93-17 vote Wednesday. An identical bill is expected to win easy approval in the Senate. State universities already are allowed to assess the fee.
Asked about the fee, Katherine Walker, public affairs director for State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota, responded in an e-mail that if this is House Bill 255, it’s the same or similar to a bill that passed last year and was vetoed by the governor. The earlier bill was based on Santa Fe Community College wanting its students to use an arrangement similar to the one University of Florida has with City of Gainesville transportation.
