NORTH PORT -- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating the drowning of a 2-year-old boy.
At approximately 10:10 a.m., a resident of 200 A Orduna Drive in North Port went outside and found the child, later identified as Zackery Castro, in the swimming pool, according to a sheriff's office news release.
The resident called 911 and began CPR with their instruction. According to the sheriff's office, deputies and paramedics arrived and the child was pronounced deceased. The child was not a resident of the home and the person who found him did not know him.
After deputies went door to door, they found the child's mother across the street several homes away from where the drowning happened. Deputies said the father of the child was notified at work.
Neither parent had seen the child since late Monday night, according to the sheriff's office.
This is an active investigation and the Department of Children and Families is on its way to investigate, the sheriff's office said.
