Sarasota police charge 64-year-old man in double homicide

SARASOTA -- Police have charged a Sarasota man with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting that occurred Monday, according to Sarasota Police Department.

The shootings took place at 5:30pm in the 1700 block of 33rd Street in Sarasota. Carlos Suarez Jr., 83 and Johnny Campbell, 65, were shot, one died at the scene, and the other was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The victims and Ronald E. Howard, 64, were neighbors and have known each other for a while, police said. The three had a dispute earlier in the day and Howard closed the residence door, opened it back up, said, "God bless you," and then closed it again.

Witnesses said Howard later shot in the victims in the front yard, according to a release.

Police said Howard was found in the carport area after he was pointed out by witnesses. A Smith & Wesson .38 Revolver was lying in the yard between Howard and one of the victims, and there was blood on Howard’s hands.

Howard is currently being held without bond at the Sarasota County Jail.
