SARASOTA -- Police are looking for a man who attacked a woman while she was walking her dog this week, according to the Sarasota Police Department.
The woman said she was walking her dog at 10:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of North Lockwood Ridge Road in Sarasota when a man came up behind her and tried to strangle her with a metal wire, according to a release.
The victim's dog scared the man and she was able to fight him off before he ran away in an unknown direction, police said. The man was described as 5 feet and 11 inches tall, about 220 pounds, with a muscular build and brown hair.
While officers were investigating the incident, a neighbor said he had noticed a man who fit that description hiding behind a dumpster a few days earlier.
Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to call Detective Maria Llovio at 941-364-7336 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers by calling 941-366-TIPS (8477) or online at www.sarasotacrimestoppers.com.
“We encourage anyone who might see something out of the ordinary to give our Officers a call,” said Detective Maria Llovio. “We would rather have an Officer respond and have the call turn out to be nothing than not be called at all.”
The Sarasota Police Department said they encourage people walking at night to stay in well-lit areas, keep a whistle, not to wear headphones and to walk with confidence and keep your head up.
