Sarasota road reopened following suspected drunk-driving crash

SARASOTA -- A crash likely related to alcohol consumption shut down a major section of Mound Street in Sarasota early Tuesday, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

At 2:30 a.m. a man lost control of his vehicle, a 2004 BMW, and drove it over the center median on Mound Street (U.S. 41) and struck a palm tree, police said.

The damage totaled the car, causing an extremely large amount of engine fluid, transmission oil and other vehicle fluids to spread over the roadway at the south curve approaching the U.S. 301 and U.S. 41 split, according to a release.

Police said they suspect the accident was alcohol related. The car was totaled and the driver suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the roadway was reopened as of 6:39 a.m.
