Manatee County Saturation Patrol collars 12 arrests, including 4 DUIs

MANATEE -- The Manatee County Sheriff's Office made 12 arrests during its DUI Saturation Patrol, which began at 11 p.m. Friday and finished at 5 a.m. Saturday. Four arrests were made for DUI, two for driving without a license, two for introducing contraband into a detention facility and two for criminal mischief, and single arrests made for possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.

Sixteen citations were issued including six for speeding, six for miscellaneous violations, two for driving without a license and one driving on the wrong side of the roadway with a DUI arrest. Four warnings were issued. More than 17,000 people are killed and another 305,000 people are injured as a result of impaired drivers, according to the National Highway Transportation Administration.

Studies show the average DUI driver commits this violation 80 times per year or once every four or five nights.

National averages show an alcohol related fatality occurs every 30 minutes and these incidents cost society more than $54 billion annually in lost productivity, medical expenses, damages and other expenditures.
