Manatee woman motorist escapes mid-afternoon armed robbery attempt

MANATEE -- A male suspect pointed a handgun at a 27-year-old female in Manatee County at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and demanded her cell phone, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The attempted robbery occurred in the 3000 block of First Street, according to the report. The suspect was described as a male, 18- to 21-years-old, 150-180 pounds, driving a silver SUV with New York plates.

The victim told deputies she was driving south on First Street approaching the 2600 block when the SUV pulled alongside her and rolled its window down at the light.

The suspect told the victim he wanted her phone. She drove off southbound on First Street before being stopped at the next light at 30th Avenue where the suspect again demanded her cell phone -- this time pointing a silver handgun at her.

She ran the red light continuing south. The vehicle followed her a short while but eventually turned east on U.S. 301 Blvd. while she continued on First Street toward Cortez. The victim did not sustain any injuries during the incident, according to the report.
